3 ways to become best friends with the Social Media algorithm
Here's the thing Sharon…
It's not the algorithm's fault no one likes your content.
You've forgotten the actual definition of SOCIAL - MEDIA
Relating to society or its organization.
Synonyms: communal, community, community-based, collective, group
An informal social gathering, especially one organized by the members of a particular club or group
Synonyms: party, gathering, get-together, celebration, festivity, jamboree
The main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the internet) regarded collectively.
Plural form of Medium
A means by which something is communicated or expressed.
Synonyms: means, method, way, form, channel, forum
So, Sharon, if you're one of those people who show up on social media, post your content, walk away and expect everyone to come flocking then you're the problem with the algorithm.
The AI (Artificial Intelligence) is designed to reward those who show up and actively use social media as it was intended to be used.
A MEANS FOR YOU TO HAVE A MASSIVE ONLINE JAMBOREE!
YOU: “Alright Jess, this is great and all, but like, how DO you switch your mentality and start showing up in a communal way?”
ME: “Well I’m glad you asked, Sharon, I’ve got a few tips for you!”
SOCIAL MEDIA GROWTH TIP #1
PRIME THE ALGORITHM
Unless you want to be the wallflower in the corner at the party, you need to work the room.
This involves actively chatting with your existing friends and meeting new people.
It’s just just lip services when people say how important it is to actively engage with other accounts.
To efficiently prime the algorithm spend 30 minutes before you post to your feed liking and commenting on other people’s posts - I like to include three types of accounts: people I follow, people who follow me, and people who are not following me, but appear to be my ideal customers.
This will do several things for you:
It tells the social media platform you are a real human being and not a bot auto-posting content
It warms up your audience and starts the conversation
Gets the attention of your ideal customer and invites them to visit your page (Please don’t be that person who comments and DMs people telling them to check out your page - don’t be the sleazy car salesman).
SOCIAL MEDIA GROWTH TIP #2
RESPOND TO EVERY SINGLE COMMENT
It’s so sad when I see posts with comments left all alone… if someone came up to you at a party and complimented your shoes, would you just look at them and walk away without saying a thing??
NO, you most certainly wouldn’t because you’re a good human being, Sharon.
So why are you doing that on social media??
And liking their comment is basically telling them you heard them, but don’t have the decency to respond so that’s just as bad (if not worse).
Social media is supposed to be exactly what it says - SOCIAL.
Also, when you respond, it tells the algorithm you are a real human being and are actively trying to build community - it likes that and will reward you for it.
SOCIAL MEDIA GROWTH TIP #3
WATCH OTHER PEOPLE’S STORIES
People aren’t posting to their stories praying that no one watches it. They want to be seen and heard.
Doesn’t it feel good when you notice people actively watching and engaging with your stories?
Of course it does!
So let’s give someone else that same warm and fuzzy feeling by reciprocating the effort.
Let them know you’re interested by responding to their polls, questions, and slide bar rate meters.
Send them a slew of emojis or quick messages to let them know you’re actually paying attention.
This not only tells people you care, but also tells the algorithm that you’re a what??
REAL HUMAN BEING
THE MORAL OF THE STORY…
Think of social media like a giant party where you only know a handful of people.
You’re looking to do some hardcore networking with potential customers and find like-minded people to collaborate with.
The algorithm will quickly become your new BFF if you have that mentality.
With social media, the more you give, the more you get… so go out there and GIVE GIVE GIVE.
